We seem to be stuck in an unseasonal hot spell. People have been reporting flycatchers and a few species of warblers, but for the most part it’s been pretty quiet in St. Louis.
Forest Park afternoon birds included:
- Great Egret
- Green Heron
- Wood Duck
- Mallard
- European Starling
- American Robin
- American Goldfinch
I hadn’t seen a hummingbird in the yard since Wednesday and as the level in the feeder hadn’t dropped, I thought they had moved on. But as I pulled into the garage this afternoon I spotted one zipping through a yard across the alley. Checking our feeder, I saw that its level had dropped by half since this morning, and when I refilled it I saw one of the tiny beasts fly into the silver maple next door. It would have been a pity if they had left before the Mexican bush sage bloomed (it is taking its time).
