These are a couple of photos taken through the kitchen window this morning of sparrows in the backyard. The Oregon Dark-eyed Junco is unusual for the Saint Louis area. This one has been visiting the yard since the 19th. The background in the photo of the Song Sparrow is, alas, what much of the backyard looks like after a lateral sewer line repair a couple of weeks ago.

hello…..i am working construction and staying in Maryland Heights. At sunrise the past 2 mornings i have woke to a magnificent song bird…it is the most beautiful and varying song . I spotted the bird in a low shrub treeand she is fearless. Her colors are grey and dark grey with a long tail feather. She is rather plump, well fed i’d say……..and in the shrub tree next to her is a well made nest about the size of half a football. any idea?
Hi Gary,
It sounds as though you’re hearing and seeing a Northern Mockingbird. They imitate the songs and calls of other birds and develop extensive song repertoires. They’re bold, as well.
I don’t yet have a photo of one for the site, but here is a link to a couple of nice shots I found on the web:
