Summer doldrums

Have I complained about summer before? Heat, humidity, bright light, ticks—it’s the time of year I like least.

I like the idea of finding breeding birds and of a season that lacks the frenzy of migration, but I don’t seem to get out much in June and July. I did walk around Forest Park a bit this afternoon with my camera. Below is a snap from the sequence I took of a Green Heron catching and eating a frog. The entire sequence was rather grisly. I hope to put up a summary soon.

Green Heron

Two summer projects: (1) a backyard butterfly survey to be carried out during July and maybe a couple of weeks into August and (2) a database class, which begins Monday.

I’ve done a couple of the survey counts, which require me to walk around my yard and observe butterflies. This is great fun even when no butterflies are present—I have an impressive talent for wandering around or just standing and looking at flowers, trees, bees, flies…

The database class may turn out to be nature related. If one of the requirements is to build a database, I can get started on the next version of my birding database.
