Hi Gary,

It sounds as though you’re hearing and seeing a Northern Mockingbird. They imitate the songs and calls of other birds and develop extensive song repertoires. They’re bold, as well.

I don’t yet have a photo of one for the site, but here is a link to a couple of nice shots I found on the web:

www.jkcassady.com/gallery/nomo.htm

Regards,
Sherry

hello.....i am working construction and staying in Maryland Heights. At sunrise the past 2 mornings i have woke to a magnificent song bird...it is the most beautiful and varying song . I spotted the bird in a low shrub treeand she is fearless. Her colors are grey and dark grey with a long tail feather. She is rather plump, well fed i'd say........and in the shrub tree next to her is a well made nest about the size of half a football. any idea?

Mario,

I wish I could read Croatian! (Apart from English, my only languages are Spanish and some reading ability in French.)

I enjoyed seeing your photos and look forward to seeing more. The chicks must have been happy to see Mom with that unfortunate lizard in her beak. What a thrill to watch those babies grow and fledge.

Regards,
It was so sad story indeed.
Just thought you might like to see hawk's nest built at my balcony at 20th floor three years ago. Two squadrons of hawks have been born there on my balcony this so called 'wild birds' chosed for their home.
http://thumbsnap.com/v/SfNnDxpO.jpg
Obviously, there is no Empty Nest Sindrome here!
(Unfortunately, only in Croatian language so far).

John and Judith,

Thanks! I’m glad you enjoyed the photos and that you got to see the owlets. I hadn’t been able to spend much time in the park—the day I took the photo was the first time I had seen the babies.

Great photos! We especially liked the one of the two owlets in Tower Grove. We were visiting out daughter (she lives in St. Louis) and she took us over to see the owls there on March 12th, 2006. We saw both the male, female and one owlet that was out of the nest and had a glipse of the other two that were in the nest yet at that time. So thanks for the update and current photo. Keep up the good work on reporting your sightings. We enjoy them.

Weather maps show a huge, hot high pressure dome over the entire middle third of the country, with temps in the 90s up to the Canadian border.
